2026 Toyota Hilux Is Finally Here - And It’s More SAVAGE Than Ever?!

The 2026 Toyota HiLux is getting closer to its official reveal, and new spy photos give us a better look at what to expect from the next generation of this popular pickup truck. Despite high anticipation for a fully redesigned model, the latest prototypes suggest that Toyota has chosen a different path. Instead of building the HiLux on an entirely new platform, the company appears to be heavily updating the existing design that has been on sale since 2015.

The camouflaged prototypes were recently spotted testing in Thailand, which is the main production hub for the HiLux sold in Australia and many global markets. At first glance, the overall body structure, including the roofline and doors, looks unchanged from the current model. This mirrors Toyota’s strategy with the latest Camry, where the main body carried over but the styling at the front and rear was completely refreshed.

Up front, the headlights appear similar in shape to the current HiLux, but the grille design looks bolder with a wider stance and a honeycomb pattern. Around the back, the tail-lights seem inspired by the North American Toyota Tacoma, with new C-shaped light signatures. The tailgate may also feature large embossed Toyota lettering, though this detail remains hidden under camouflage. Some versions spied also include a sports bar, hinting at higher-grade trims similar to the Rogue edition available today.

Mechanically, major changes appear limited. The reliable 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine is expected to continue, now paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that improves efficiency and responsiveness. This system was recently introduced in the Toyota Prado, where it is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, it is not yet confirmed if the HiLux will adopt the same gearbox or continue with the existing six-speed automatic. Entry-level models are expected to keep the smaller 2.4-litre turbo-diesel option, while markets outside Australia may still offer the naturally aspirated 2.7-litre petrol four-cylinder.

There are no strong indications that Toyota will add a six-cylinder option to compete directly with rivals like the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok, both of which offer more powerful V6 diesel engines. Toyota’s focus seems to remain on durability, reliability, and efficiency, rather than chasing outright power.

Inside, bigger changes are anticipated. The current HiLux interior has fallen behind rivals in terms of technology and features. Reports suggest that Toyota will introduce a more modern cabin with better materials and its latest infotainment system. A larger touchscreen is expected, possibly up to 12.3 inches like the new Prado, compared to the 8.0-inch unit in today’s HiLux. This upgrade could help the pickup feel more competitive against newer rivals from Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Volkswagen, and even Kia, which are all offering more advanced interiors.

The big question is whether this semi-redesign will be enough to reclaim sales leadership. In Australia, the HiLux has dominated overall for years, especially in two-wheel drive sales. However, in recent years the Ford Ranger’s strength in four-wheel drive sales allowed it to overtake the HiLux, becoming Australia’s best-selling vehicle in 2023 and 2024. Whether the 2026 Toyota HiLux can reverse that trend will depend on how well customers respond to the updates.

The official reveal is expected later this year, with production models likely reaching showrooms in late 2025 or early 2026.
