Heavy rains that pounded parts of the island of São Miguel, Portugal, caused flooding to submerge roads, sweep away cars and cause widespread damage on Monday.

As seen in several videos, the area in Ribeira Grande was particularly hard hit, as floodwaters paralyzed the roads in Ribeirinha.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has also issued a yellow warning regarding possible rainfall, sometimes heavy and possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, for eastern islands including São Miguel and Santa Maria.
