Most fully equipped camper conversions demand a professional workshop, a large budget and months of carefully scheduled work, but Bronson Grace has none of those advantages; he has a used government van, approximately 90 days and a plan to create a mobile home for around $6,000, before driving it from the cold of western Canada to the beaches of Mexico.

The starting point is a 2007 Chevrolet Express 3500 Extended with a towering fiberglass roof, a 6.0-litre V8 and barely 60,000 miles on the odometer. It appears to be the ideal foundation: long enough for a real interior, high enough to stand inside and powerful enough to carry a serious conversion. But low mileage does not guarantee an easy build. Beneath the cargo mat are years of hidden wear, the mechanical systems resist simple changes, and every piece of furniture will eventually become additional weight that the van must accelerate, brake and control on the road.

Bronson intends to complete almost everything himself. He must repair the shell, design the living space, fabricate the structure, install power, water, heat and ventilation, and make dozens of decisions where comfort competes with weight, cost and reliability.

The challenge here is to make hundreds of improvised parts operate as one functional home and then trust the result across thousands of miles.
