On July 30, 2025, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 struck off the coast of Kamchatka. The epicenter was located 136 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of about 20 km. This became the strongest earthquake in Russia in recent decades. The tremors caused building damage and power outages, and some people were injured. A state of emergency was declared across Kamchatka, and coastal areas were evacuated. The earthquake triggered a tsunami that reached the coasts of Japan, the Kuril Islands, and other countries. About 2 million people were evacuated in Japan, and over one million in Chile. More than 90 aftershocks were recorded within a day, including one measuring magnitude 6.9. Seismologists continue monitoring the situation and urge vigilance due to possible new tremors and tsunamis.
