A line of severe thunderstorms crossed Auckland and hit Great Barrier Island.

At the height of the storms on Wednesday, winds reached 120km/h in some parts of Auckland, and hail bucketed down.

An orange strong wind warning was in place for Auckland and Great Barrier Island until 2am while strong wind watches covered Northland, Waikato and the Coromandel Peninsula.
