Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant that sends root-like structures into tree branches, stealing water and nutrients from the host tree.
To control or remove it, several methods can be used:
Pruning: For effective control, the infested branch must be removed at least 1 foot below the point where the mistletoe is attached. Simply cutting off the visible part of the mistletoe will only provide short-term control as new sprouts will grow from the part embedded in the wood,.
Covering: If it is not possible to prune a major branch or trunk, the area can be covered with sturdy black polyethylene plastic secured with twine or tape to block sunlight. This plastic should be left on for up to two years until the mistletoe dies.
