A tornado watch has been issued for parts of Kansas and Missouri, including the Kansas City metro area, as severe thunderstorms threaten the region, according to the National Weather Service. The watch is in effect until 9 p.m. in Kansas City and eastern Kansas into central Missouri.

Thousands of people are without power in the Kansas City metro as severe storms entered the area Monday afternoon. According to Evergy, more than 42,000 customers were impacted on Monday. Evergy said the worst damage was in the Kansas City metro area and included downed wires and broken poles.
