Today, a massive flood disaster occurred in Guangfu Township, Hualien, Taiwan due to the overflow of the landslide lake upstream of the Mataian Creek. Residents described it as "like a tsunami". The Mataian Creek landslide lake in Hualien, with a storage capacity of over 91 million tons, overflowed at 2:30 PM, sending a torrent of black and brown floodwater and mud and sand careening downstream.

Dark brown floodwaters, mixed with mud and sand, quickly washed downstream, forcing the Mataian Creek Bridge to collapse and causing the levee to fail. The muddy water then flowed down the river into Guangfu City, flooding and displacing over a thousand cars, leaving many trapped in their homes.
