Typhoon Opong battered several Masbate city early Friday, tearing off roofs, toppling trees, and flooding low-lying areas as strong winds and heavy rains lashed the province. As of 7 a.m., the typhoon was spotted over the coastal waters of Mandaon town, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour, and gusts of up to 150 kph.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, reported on Friday that nearly 430,000 individuals, or about 120,888 families, were preemptively evacuated across several regions. Severe Tropical Storm Opong has now reached Mindoro after crossing the Sibuyas and Tablas Islands in Romblon.
